Start with the job: a talking video or a training course?
Choose CleanCut when your first task is removing pauses from a tutorial, interview or podcast for free. Import the recording, adjust the silence threshold, minimum duration and speech padding, then review the cuts. The result stays editable on the same multitrack timeline.
Camtasia is worth evaluating for an established training workflow: screen demonstrations, reusable presentation material, interactive quizzes and SCORM delivery. Those course-authoring requirements are different from simply finishing an MP4; CleanCut does not provide quizzes or SCORM packages.
How silence cleanup differs
CleanCut's basic silence detection runs locally and does not need a transcript or a Pro license. Silence removal detects quiet audio; it does not decide whether a spoken sentence is useful. Listen to the result and keep intentional pauses.
Camtasia's Audiate workflow uses a transcript to edit speech and handle hesitations or pauses, with changes synchronized back to the editor. Check whether Audiate is included in the plan you are considering. Its speech-to-text and other AI features require connected processing.
What you pay for
CleanCut Free includes recording, the core editor and watermark-free MP4 export without a video-duration limit. The free allowance of three automatic subtitle exports is separate from ordinary exports. Pro adds MCP assistant integration, filler and retake detection, batch processing and unlimited automatic subtitle exports. The allowance is per local profile and does not reset monthly.
Camtasia Editor's trial exports carry a watermark; a paid Editor plan removes that limit. Its free online recorder and its paid desktop Editor are different offerings. Compare the exact tools in your plan using TechSmith's current pricing, rather than assuming every advertised feature is included.
Try the same recording in both editors
- Use a short recording containing natural pauses and one section you want to keep intact.
- Compare cleanup, add a title and a camera layer, then check the audio around each cut.
- Export and reopen the native project. Check watermark rules, platform support and any course-delivery requirements before committing.
